Born in Louisville in 1952, Squire Babcock has held a rich variety of jobs: Louisville service-station attendant; ballroom-dance assistant instructor (Louisville); farmhand on an Arkansas sweet-potato farm; weigh-man in an Arkansas cotton gin; assistant hunting guide (Arkansas); pool-table repair mechanic (Kentucky/Tennessee); small-business owner (pool tables-Nashville); freelance journalist (Massachusetts); framing carpenter (Massachusetts); middle-school English teacher (Eaglebrook); and as the drummer in a very cool Pioneer Valley (Massachusetts) blues/boogie trio. He is currently Professor Emeritus at Murray State University in western Kentucky, where he taught creative writing and literature for 25 years. He is the loving father of Hannah Babcock: cheerleader, Special Olympics athlete, thespian, dreamer, and all-around goofball. Squire has taken up woodturning in recent years and reports that he is passionately and permanently hooked on coaxing useful and/or inspiring shapes from the beautiful wood he finds in Kentucky, Tennessee and around the world.
